Here are some answers to the questions we're asked most about JazzApril. It's time to celebrate-- and participate.

What IS JazzApril?

It's a shorthand way to say "April is Jazz Month" and to tie together the Smithsonian's annual celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month in April and International Jazz Day on April 30. The Jazz Journalists Association began its JazzApril project in 2012 to celebrate and promote both JAM and IJD. As part of that project, the JJA works with members of LOCAL jazz communities to:

raise the profile of jazz in the media, especially local media

reach out to people who aren't already part of the jazz audience and share the music and its history

strengthen local, national and international jazz NETWORKS

give some props to the people who keep jazz alive locally via the JJA's Jazz Hero awards.

You, yes, you can participate as an individual, or as part of an organization, school, business or media outlet.

Wait a minute: Why do we need a special month for jazz? I play/listen to/teach about/promote/celebrate jazz all year.

So do we! But we think it can be very effective, once a year, to make a special, united effort to show the world that there are lots of us who play, listen to, teach about, work to further, and care about the music. With the decline of the recording industry, and the shrinkage of record company promotional budgets, it's all too easy for non-jazz media to overlook the ongoing creativity and productivity of jazz musicians, and to ignore the important contributions of jazz educators, organizations and businesses to local cultural and economic life. In short, we know jazz is alive and well, and we want everyone else to know it, too.

OK then-- so how can I participate in JazzApril?

Below are some things everyone can do; on other pages of this site you'll find additional ways musicians, educators, journalists/media makers, broadcasters and businesses and organizations can participate.

Whoever you are, you can spread the word about JazzApril and about Jazz Appreciation Month and International Jazz Day by doing the following:

Add the JazzApril ribbon ("Twibbon") to your Facebook and Twitter icon.

Use Facebook, Twitter and other social media to tell your friends about your April jazz activities --whether that means performing at or attending a jazz concert, teaching your class about jazz history, or listening to a jazz record you love. Include #jazzapril or #jazzday and #celebrateJAM and your Tweet will be seen on the Twitter widget on this site.

Add JazzApril logos to your website or blog They are available in many sizes and shapes and two color schemes right here. (You can also get the Jazz Appreciation Month and Jazz Day logos there.) And if you email us the link to the page where you've added the JazzApril logo, we may mention you on our Facebook page. Email jazzapril@jazzjournalists.org

Contact your local newspapers, online publications and broadcasters about their jazz coverage. If it's a publication that covers jazz frequently or a station with a jazz program(s), thank them. If it isn't doing such a good job of including jazz, tell them that you are a jazz supporter and you'd like to see more jazz coverage or programming. Either way, mention that April is Jazz Month and that this would be a good time to do a roundup of local jazz activities.

And, of course, you should keep an eye out for local Jazz Appreciation Month, Jazz Day and JazzApril activities and attend and support them! Both JAM and IJD have online event calendars, as does Jazz Near You, a year-round worldwide jazz event calendar. If you are organizing an April jazz event, you can get them listed on those calendars.

Take an extra step to support the music financially during April:

We know your budget is tight-- but if all of us don't support jazz, who will?

Go out and hear some live jazz in a local venue. Take a friend (or two), especially if your friend(s) aren't already jazz fans. Thank the musicians personally for their work.

Buy some jazz recordings-- stretch your taste by trying something you haven't heard before or fill out your collection of classics.

Make a contribution to a local non-profit jazz organization, broadcaster, blogger, publication or school. Many accept donations on their websites. Tell them it's to celebrate Jazz Month.

We'll be posting other easy ways for you to participate in JazzApril on the JJA Facebook page and Twitter feed throughout April. Please "like" and "follow" us to get these updates.
Yes, today, April 30, is the big finale to the celebration of jazz we've all been having all month long: It's International Jazz Day. Special jazz events are planned around the world, from Albania to Zimbabwe. You can see the list of many of them on the International Jazz Day site. The Jazz Journalists Association itself is co-hosting events in six cities today.

The focal point event for International Jazz Day is the Global Concert that will be webcast live from Istanbul, Turkey, this year's host city for International Jazz Day. Star performers include Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper, Eddie Palmieri, Milton Nascimiento and a long list of others. The webcast can be viewed anywhere with an internet connection; it starts at 9pm Istanbul time (that's 2pm NY time, 7pm in London, 4am in Sydney).

In some locales there will be concert viewing parties, like the one JazzBoston is organizing in that city. (check the International Jazz Day site and your local jazz listings for others.)

In some places there's so much going on that you may have to choose (or clone yourself!).

Here in New York, the Jazz Journalists Association is co-hosting an afternoon party (starts 2pm) with the Louis Armstrong House Museum. Recently discovered Louis Armstrong recordings will be publicly presented for the first time and trumpeters Stephanie Richards, Igmar Thomas, Jeremy Pelt, and David Weiss will play a new fanfare for Louis. If you aren't the area, this event will also be livestreamed.

The JJA is also helping to organize parties and other events to celebrate JJA Jazz Heroes nominated by local communities. Five such events are scheduled for today, in New Orleans (for Kidd Jordan) Ottawa (Roddy Ellias), Seattle (Julian Priester), Detroit (Marcus Belgrave), and Nashville (Beegie Adair). If you live in one of those places, we hope you'll attend to honor one of the folks who keep jazz going all year round in your community-- and to have a great time with other jazz lovers in your area.
(The JJA is honoring 26 Jazz Heroes in all this year; celebrations for some have already happened, others are scheduled between now and the end of June.)

And, of course, jazz doesn't stop when JazzApril is over. In fact, tomorrow, May 1, the Jazz Journalists Association will be announcing the winners of the 2013 JJA Jazz Awards for Music. The list will be posted at www.JJAJazzAwards.org at noon.

So HAPPY JAZZ DAY and here's to MORE JAZZ in the days, weeks and months to come.
The focus of the event is the public premier of newly discovered recordings by the beloved trumpeter and entertainer Louis Armstrong, who made them at a fabled although short-lived Bronx amusement park in 1961. Highlights from Armstrong's live performances from the 85-acre park billed as the "World's Largest Entertainment Center," which boasted more than 63,000 guests for its opening day in 1960, will be played. These recordings, recently donated to the Museum by the son of Freedomland sound engineer Peter Denis, have never been circulated or issued, and are not listed in jazz discographies.

The program will be presented and interpreted by Ricky Riccardi, the Museum's Archivist and the author of What a Wonderful World: The Magic of Louis Armstrong's Later Years, and Dan Morgenstern, recently retired Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University. Morgenstern is a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, the nation’s highest honor in Jazz, as well as a recipient of the JJA's Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism Award.

UPDATE 5/25: The program will also feature a trumpet fanfare composed just for the occasion by trumpeter/ composer/ performance artist Stephanie Richards which she'll perform with fellow New York trumpeters Jeremy Pelt, David Weiss and Igmar Thomas.

This event celebrates International Jazz Day (sponsored by UNESCO), and the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month (a major initiative of the Smithsonian Institution. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has issued a proclamation honoring International Jazz Day, which will also be presented as part of the program.

JazzApril starts NOW: April is Jazz Appreciation Month (so named by the Smithsonian Institution), culminating on the 30th with International Jazz Day (a project of UNESCO, organized by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz) — and both those initiatives are endorsed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. So the Jazz Journalists Association has launched a major media campaign called JazzApril in support of local jazz scenes taking advantage of JAM and IJD to raise awareness of the jazz resources all around us, and today posted bios + photos of 25 JJA “Jazz Heroes,” nominated by grassroots activists in 25 cities which will have parties to celebrate them, ask officials to proclaim their endorsements, and generally make noise to show that jazz is everywhere, in April and all year long.

JazzApril is no joke — while launched in cooperation with the Smithsonian and the Monk Institute, it’s an independent project of the JJA, the brainchild of or organization’s media director and Ozmotic Media principal JoAnn Kawell, and has come together quickly due to the efforts of jazz devotees from Boston to Austin, Gainesville to Seattle (and Ottawa, too). It’s a pro bono initiative, and experiment in social media.

Can a small cadre of professional jazz journalists, self-motivated presenters and loyal fans make a visible wave on Facebook and Twitter to reach beyond the jazz audience as we know it, building on our friends’ and followers’ interests?

Can jazz support organizations such as JazzBoston, Jazz from Bloomington, the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the Western Jazz Presenters Network, Philadelphia’s Jazz Bridge, Cleveland’s Tri-C Jazz Festival, the Tucson Jazz Society, and the Jazz Society of Oregon keep their focus local while connecting for a common good?

Some two dozen cities and towns around the U.S., and the world, are in process of nominating 2013 Jazz Heroes to be honored during JazzApril. The Jazz Heroes are local "activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz who have had significant impact in their local communities."

The Jazz Heroes awards are part of the Jazz Journalists Association's annual JJA Jazz Awards program. The 2013 Jazz Heroes will be announced on April 1, and this year's Jazz Heroes awards will be presented at locally organized parties held during JazzApril . UPDATE: Here's the list of 2013 Jazz Heroes.
To date, party planning is well underway in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Gainesville FL, Nashville, New Orleans, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Schenectady NY, Tallahassee FL and Washington D.C. Other locations will be added to the list and party dates and locations will be announced soon. The parties will be free and open to public and will provide a chance for local musicians, jazz fans and activists and JJA members to mingle and meet in an informal setting as they honor this year's "Jazz Hero." At many parties, free Brother Thelonious ale, provided by JJA Jazz Awards sponsor North Coast Brewing, will be served.
The Jazz Journalists Association has worked with local jazz groups to present the Jazz Heroes awards since 2010; in previous years the JJA honored local jazz activists with "A Team" awards
The Jazz Journalists Association is holding an online discussion on Wednesday March 13 on how to get a local proclamation about Jazz Month/Jazz Day, and other ways to work with local government. We'll also be talking about the JJA's 2013 "Jazz Heroes" awards, which honor "activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz who have had significant impact in their local communities" and about locally organized jazz "satellite parties" which will be held in April this year to celebrate JazzApril and the Jazz Heroes.
UPDATE: This discussion was recorded and you can view it here.

Jazz is most alive and thriving at the local level-- the soaring number of local jazz festivals and schools is testament to that. And in many places neighborhood jazz clubs regularly put the spotlight on local musicians, some of whom are getting their first public stage and others who are nationally known but keep coming home to play for those who know and love them best.

One of the main goals of JazzApril is to raise the profile of local jazz scenes and communities that may not yet have received the recognition they deserve from local governments and local media.

A good way to do both is to get a local government proclamation recognizing Jazz Month/JazzDay. Such a proclamation can be used as a "news peg" to emphasis the importance of, and attract local media coverage for, local JazzApril events.

This should be possible in many locales: The U.S. Conference of Mayors is urging "mayors to build partnerships with their local jazz society and other members of the arts and music community in their cities to proclaim, to participate in, International Jazz Day April 30, 2013 and to celebrate the month of April as Jazz Appreciation Month."

If you host or produce a broadcast or webcast that features jazz, even occasionally, you too can participate in Jazz April. All you have to do is plan a Jazz April program and let us know about it. Or, if that's not possible within your format, try some of the other suggestions you'll find on our Broadcasters page.

During Jazz April, jazz radio, tv, and web hosts will play a key role in informing listeners and viewers everywhere about jazz events in their communities as well as in other parts of the globe. Their programs will also be, for many people, the "soundtrack" for Jazz April: a readily available source of great jazz listening throughout the month.

In the meantime, please "follow" JazzApril on Twitter@JazzApril_JJA; and include #jazzapril (as well as #celebrateJAM and #jazzday where posssible) in your own tweets. We'll also be posting JazzApril news and tips on the. JJA Facebook page .

Radio is the way many of today's jazz fans first learned about the music, and radio (and now webcasts) are the way many people around the world continue to keep up with the music they love most---jazz.

Television made it possible to keep jazz in front of a large popular audience in the mid-20th century; today tv and videos still give many the best view they can have of live jazz performance.

We believe that, despite recent cutbacks in jazz programming in some places, jazz still plays an essential role as both culture and entertainment. Let's make that inescapably clear during JazzApril--- and every day thereafter.
What goes better with food and drink than jazz? Cafes, restaurants, bars and other eating and drinking establishments can participate in JazzApril in a variety of ways, including "April is Jazz Month" discounts, food and drink specials named after jazz greats, playing recorded jazz on the premises or, even better, booking local jazz musicians.

On April 30, International Jazz Day, you might also consider showing the webcast of Herbie Hancock and other jazz luminaries in a day-long series of concerts livestreamed from Istanbul, Turkey. Call it a viewing party and be sure to invite your best customers.

And there are other ways to involve your customers in special jazz events: One of the most creative we've seen are the Jazz Drawing Sessions held at Chez Lucien in Ottawa; shown below in a 2011 eyeJAZZ video by Chris Plecash.

In fact, no matter what kind of business or organization you have, there's a way for you to take part in JazzApril and get the word out about jazz in your community while turning local jazz fans into loyal customers. This is a grassroots, DYI campaign to support Jazz Appreciation Month and International Jazz Day, and there are no requirements or payments to participate. Find out more and get other tips, suggestions and free resources here.
