The Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) is dedicated to promoting the best use of media of all kinds --new and old, online and off-- to tell the story of jazz and develop new jazz audiences.
- The JJA supports the creation and dissemination of accurate, balanced, ethical and informative journalism on all of jazz’s genres; the growth, development and education of the jazz audience and the dissemination of information pertaining to jazz to the general public.
- The JJA fosters the development of journalistic and media skills in jazz journalists and others-- such as musicians, presenters, promoters , and publicists-- who make use of media in their own work, and it promotes the interests of writers, photographers, broadcasters, new media professionals and others covering jazz.
- The JJA conducts online training programs for new and veteran journalists and has also produced mini-conferences, panel discussions, "critics clinics," book signings and social events at jazz festivals, educational institutions and performance venues.
- The JJA sustains a mentorship program for emerging jazz journalists as well as networking and individual consulting services for all members.
- The JJA Jazz Awards have been presented each year since 1997 for excellence in jazz musicianship and journalism.
- The annual JJA Jazz Hero Awards recognize exceptional contributions to local jazz communities.
Membership in the JJA is open to all:
- JJA Professional Journalist members nominate and vote for winners of the annual Jazz Awards. Writers, photographers, broadcasters, bloggers, videographers and others who cover jazz professionally are invited to join the JJA as Professional Journalist members.
- All others concerned with overall media coverage of jazz and related topics, or with supporting the work of the JJA, are invited to join as Associate Members.
- Companies, institutions and organizations are invited to join as Supporting Members.
